Malaysia is making substantial headway in its energy transition journey, with renewable energy sources now accounting for nearly 32 per cent of the nation's installed capacity as of June. This achievement places the country squarely on track to realise its 2030 renewable energy target of 35 per cent, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who made the announcement during the launch of the Large-Scale Solar Project Five (LSS5) in Pasir Mas, Kelantan. The progress demonstrates that Malaysia's systematic approach to overhauling its energy infrastructure is yielding tangible results, even as global pressures for decarbonisation mount.

The government had already surpassed an important interim milestone by achieving 31 per cent renewable energy capacity by December 2025, meeting its earlier benchmark with time to spare. Beyond the 2030 target, Malaysian authorities have charted an even more ambitious trajectory, aiming to reach 70 per cent renewable energy penetration by mid-century. His rhetoric emphasised that renewable energy development offers a pathway for Kelantan to enhance its competitive positioning and attract sophisticated manufacturing and technology operations. The Solar ATAP Programme, administered by PETRA, offers homeowners, religious institutions, and commercial enterprises opportunities to deploy rooftop photovoltaic systems, thereby distributing renewable capacity across the landscape rather than concentrating it in large utility facilities. This distributed approach offers multiple advantages: it reduces transmission losses, enhances system resilience by decentralising generation points, and builds broader public engagement with renewable energy by creating individual economic stakes in the transition. The state possesses vast areas of suitable land for solar development, enjoys strong state government support for energy transition initiatives, and benefits from active private sector participation in project development. These favourable conditions position Kelantan to substantially increase its renewable energy contribution to the national grid, potentially becoming a significant net exporter of green electricity if deployment accelerates. For other Malaysian states with similar characteristics—particularly those with land availability and lower population density—the Kelantan example may offer a valuable template for balancing development aspirations with climate commitments.
