Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has advised all parties, particularly those in the civil service, to eschew discourteous or inappropriate language when making public pronouncements. Speaking in Putrajaya on June 15, she stressed that officials should be mindful of their words regardless of whether they are speaking during election periods or at other times.

Teo emphasised that remarks touching on race, religion and royalty — commonly referred to as 3R issues — should be avoided altogether. She made the comments after officiating an industry dialogue on journalism standards and responsible reporting, noting that her guidance applies universally rather than being limited to election cycles.

The minister's statement came amid scrutiny of Department of Community Communications (J-KOM) director-general Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, who has faced criticism for allegedly deploying unsuitable language in his public communications since taking the helm on June 9. Mohd Hisyamuddin succeeded Datuk Ismail Yusop in the role.

Teo indicated she had not yet arranged a meeting with Mohd Hisyamuddin to deliver her counsel in person. She reiterated that maintaining decorum and exercising linguistic restraint should be fundamental principles for all public servants, regardless of their position or tenure.
