The government's handling of the Bukit Kiara Longhouse residents' plight underscores its pledge to resolve community concerns promptly and decisively, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. The permanent housing initiative, granting two residential units at no cost to each qualifying household, will deliver substantial advantages to the urban poor population in Kuala Lumpur.
Ramanan, who represents Sungai Buloh as Member of Parliament, described the Prime Minister's final decision as confirmation of the administration's determination to deliver timely remedies. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presided over the ceremonial launch of the permanent housing scheme for Bukit Kiara Longhouse residents in the capital.
The initiative encompasses an extra RM1 million disbursement to Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) directed towards site upkeep across a 36-month span. While the undertaking's scope remains comparatively limited, Ramanan stressed that its transformative effect on residents who endured decades of uncertainty would be profound.
The Bukit Kiara Longhouse resettlement saga persisted for over 40 years before inhabitants' advocates launched court proceedings in 2018, culminating in an equitable solution. The settlement preserves conservation efforts at Taman Rimba Kiara, circumventing previous development strategies that had generated considerable community opposition.
